Waddington Custot

Waddington Custot is a London-based contemporary art gallery representing and exhibiting an international group of artists whose practices span painting, sculpture and works on paper.

We worked with Waddington Custot to create a film around Fabienne Verdier: Aria, exploring the artist’s distinctive approach to painting and the ideas behind her practice. The film brought together perspectives from Carmen Hu of Waddington Custot and Lang Xiao of Artouch Consulting, offering an insight into Verdier’s gestural language, her roots in calligraphy and the influence of her decade-long experience in China.

Through the film, we explored the relationship between movement, discipline and spontaneity in Verdier’s work, from her monumental handmade brush to the decisive gestures she makes with ink and paint. The result is a visual portrait of an artist whose practice reflects a deep commitment to cultural exchange, patience and precision, created in connection with the exhibition Fabienne Verdier: Aria.

Lang Xiao from ArTouch Consulting believes that Fabienne’s decade in China reflects a rare dedication, showing curiosity, humility, and patience toward another culture. A reminder that meaningful cultural exchange takes time.

As Carmen Hu from Waddington Custot notes, Fabienne Verdier’s practice is rooted in calligraphy, where control and intention are essential, especially with ink on paper, where every gesture is final. That discipline and precision remain central to her work today.
